A page that looks impressive on an office connection can feel very different in that moment.

Start with the journey you want to support: find the right service, understand the offer and get in touch. Performance work should make that journey easier, not just improve a number on a dashboard.

Understand the three different questions

Google’s Core Web Vitals cover loading, interaction responsiveness and visual stability. They are called Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), Interaction to Next Paint (INP) and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS). They describe different parts of the experience, so improving one does not automatically fix the others.

Laboratory tests and real-user measurements also answer different questions. A controlled test can help diagnose a problem. Field data reflects recorded user experiences, where it is available. One good test result should not be presented as proof that every visitor has a fast experience.

Test the most important task on a phone

Choose one real task, such as requesting a quote. Start from the page a customer would normally reach. Notice whether text is readable, the main content appears promptly, buttons are easy to use and the keyboard does not hide important form controls.

Watch for movement while the page loads. A button shifting as a banner appears can be frustrating even when the rest of the page seems quick. Try navigating back, opening the menu and correcting a form error as well as completing the ideal path.

Give your developer an evidence-based brief

List the affected URLs and the task you were attempting.

Record the device, browser and connection conditions.

Include screenshots or a short recording of visible problems.

Share the relevant test findings without assuming the cause.

Agree on how the change will be tested before and after release.

Common areas to investigate include oversized imagery, unnecessary third-party scripts, unstable space for media and expensive interactions. Your developer should confirm which issues actually affect the page before removing useful features or changing the design.

Keep the improvement in the next release

Recheck the main journey when you add a booking widget, tracking tag, video or new page template. Performance is not a one-off certificate. A short release checklist can stop a previously fixed problem returning unnoticed.

Request a Free ClickScore for available performance findings alongside other website checks, or talk to us about website improvements.
